Pool versus spa, which would be better?

I've been polling people I've met and it's really been a tough call. My son says pool, I say spa because it has a lid, warm water and we can use it throughout the year instead of just two months out of the year. Has anyone decided to have one over the other, and what was the final reasoning you used?
Well, the answers are definitely leaning towards the spa, I'm grateful for the extra advice, I'm pinching pennies but work 7 days a week at our store, we need something we can enjoy here without traveling away. Thank you all for your great answers, too bad I have to choose one over the other, but here goes…

I have to say, I would go for a spa anyday.

Maybe it's the 4,523 as opposed to the 2 laps of a pool that I could do before breakfast, maybe it's that the spa is a far more snuggly place to be with your significant other and a bottle of champers on a cool but romantic night…..

or maybe it's just that with a spa, you can have a swim and shave at the same time!

The most expensive word in owning a home is P-O-O-L. Unless your family is absolutely nuts about swimming and you can afford all the maintenance I'd advise going with the spa. My wife and I love to sit in in the spa in the winter time with a fire in the outdoor fireplace. It's hard to do that with a pool even if you have a cover over it so it can be used year round.

If money is not an object, why not have both? However, I find a spa more therapeutic for a longer period of time, since pools tend to be seasonal (unless you live where summer lasts eleven months a year [like my brother-in-law in southern California]). Get a spa with a lot of jets; those are so soothing after a long day.
